there are three kinds of characters in Japanese – hiragana, katakana, and kanji. kanji was introduced from china during the 5th century. kanji characters represent sounds and also have meaning.

hiragana and katakana represent only sounds – like in the alphabet. hiragana has a roundish shape and is used for conjugation endings, function words, and native japanese words not covered by kanji.
